Overview
Cruser's Kettle is an 8-mile black diamond singletrack mountain bike loop in the Cuyuna Hills area. The trail winds through a Crow Wing County active forest management area, making it subject to periodic forestry operations. It's a backcountry trail with only one way in and out — a round-trip commitment that requires serious climbing (estimated +787 ft elevation gain).
Current Status
Status: Partially closed due to tornado damage and recent forestry work. Repairs scheduled to begin Spring 2026.
According to Trailforks reports, approximately 50% of the trail is "gone, logged out, impossible to ride, navigate or be safe." Recent condition reports (September 2025) noted: "Take the Detour! 50% of Cruisers is gone, logged out, impossible to ride, navigate or be safe. Hoping some day this classic returns in all of its varied fundom but right now it's a mini of what is used to be."
As of February 14, 2026, Trailforks reported a "Significant Issue / Amber" status with a "leaning tree across trail" and snow-packed conditions.
Damage Timeline
June 12, 2024: Tornado Impact
A confirmed tornado struck the Cuyuna/Rabbit Lake area, causing extensive tree damage. The storm path ran through the corridor where Cruser's Kettle is located.
Reported damage:
- Century-old white pines and red oaks snapped and uprooted
- Narrow swath of destruction along Rabbit Lake/Highway 6, north of Crosby
- Hefty tree trunks blocking driveways and punching through structures
- National Weather Service confirmed tornado through the area
Local residents described "30, 40 trees at least" downed in their yards, with massive trees twisted from their trunks and dropped across properties.
Ongoing: Forestry Work
Cruser's Kettle runs through a "Crow Wing County active forest management area." This means the trail corridor is subject to periodic logging operations as part of county forest management. Trailforks reports indicate logging operations have compounded the tornado damage, creating sections that are impossible to navigate.
